As some of you may know I am newly employed. It is a great change of pace and one that I have been praying would happen for over a year now. I love my work and couldn’t imagine being any happier with a job. It’s at a daycare/pre-school and no, I won’t be saying the name because a) I don’t want you to stalk me (it’s happened) and b) I don’t want to get dooced. You know what I’m saying.
Along with this new job comes a few hazards, namely the 45-60 diseases I was told to expect to be exposed to. Sweet. I started work on September 6 and since then I have already been sick twice. Illness #1 was a bit more mysterious — body aches, fever — I just felt bad and ran a fever for about thirty-six hours. No big deal. Illness #2…that is a different story. I started feeling something Sunday night. My eye was swollen, red, and itchy. I assumed it was pink eye.
Wrong.
For the next twenty-four hours my eye (and later, eyes) burned and itched like crazy. That was Monday. Tuesday I started coughing a little. That night was Heather’s birthday dinner and it was great, but as we sat there I could feel my throat getting tighter and my sinuses start to clog up and hurt. A few people came back to my house to watch a few episodes of The Office and by the time they all left, I knew it was time for some Nyquil (which I told Aaryn I didn’t have, but I was wrong).
Got some quality sleep out of that and woke up the next morning to head off to my Pilates class. In hindsight, most definitely not the best idea. By the end of class my head was throbbing and my eyes were burning and I thought I was going to cough up a lung. Went to work where I had as little contact as possible with the children. One thing I have found out about teaching kids and being a caregiver is that you have to grin and bear it. And not cough your Germ Monsters on them. Work didn’t last as long as usual and by the time I got back to the house I was completely exhausted. Collapsed on the couch but could not manage to get any sleep. Not being able to breathe sometimes makes that process a little less than enjoyable. I missed my ministry team meeting last night and had a really hard time getting to sleep. I stayed up later than a sick person should, but was finally able to get a little rest with the help of another dose of Nyquil.
Now it’s Thursday, my head still hurts, I still have a slight fever with chills, and I go from being exhausted to being completely incapable of finding sleep…but I am a little better. Tonight is Paradigm with the BSU (Baptist Student Union at OU for those of you who haven’t been reading very long), but I don’t think I’m going to make it. This is an act of love for my brothers and sisters there. Listen folks, you don’t want this.
