Thirteen things I didn’t learn in college
As my last spring semester at the University of Oklahoma comes to a close (and attempts to murder my blog), I thought I would let you readers know a few things that college did not teach me.

1. Jerks are jerks. College does not change them. DO. NOT. DATE. THEM. (I can supply a list of names, it’s short, but informative.)
2. How to jump start my car.
3. Why I should go to class. (But I think I might have that one figured out now.
4. Worrying gets you nowhere.
5. Why Waiting for Godot is so stinkin’ important.
6. That throwing my hands in the air and joining the circus would be a bad idea.
7. Why math is important in my life. They try to tell you this lie in high school, kids. Don’t believe them. Become an English major, take Physics for Poets (actually, DON’T), and Math for Idiots and you are SET.
8. That I could be a successful human being. No. They stop telling you that after your Gateway class (freshman orientation).
9. That you should never tell your parents that you could possibly graduate early. Don’t do this. They like to hold you to things that can save them money.
10. My family is still absolutely the most important thing that I have.
11. How nice it is to drive home.
12. That anyone (aside from a few select professors and my wonderful advisor) cares about your well-being.
13. That mental health is a top priority. Don’t kid yourself.

AWESOME list! I learned these a bit later after getting out of college! It took me a couple of bumps down life’s highway before I figured them out! :) Take Care!

I think if I had “gone off” to college I would’ve gotten in some serious trouble. I really wouldn’t have learned anything then! Happy TT and mine is up!

Great list! I especially appreciated #1 since I learned that exact same lesson and it has served me well. Now, if I can only convince my daughter when she is old enough to date, I’ll be all set!

Though waiting for Godot is also dull as hell. And I almost failed math for idiots freshman year, which solidified my need for a history degree. I see you did learn all the great uses for a funnel

It’s been a lot of years since I was in college, but that list took me right back again.

Happy TT, and here’s to a great life. You’ll figure it out as you go.

Don’t you wish you knew all those when you got there? Especially jerks are jerks!

    Fun TT!

  • Jerks are jerks. Definitely. That’s a lesson that needs to be relearned, unfortunately…

The most useful math course I ever took was Practical Business Math, in high school. They taught us how to balance a checkbook, fill out tax forms, watch credit card statements, calculate compound interest, understand what banks are saying, decipher store pricing schemes, calculate discounts…all kinds of really good, useful, helpful things that are just somehow not taught to kids in the AP and college prep tracks…and I don’t know that there are “basic daily coping skills” courses in any universities, either. I never saw any. Yet people really need those skills…

I loved Waiting for Godot. Thanks for reminding me of it. It’s short enough to read over my spring break, which is next week.
