Friday night charades of youth

Aug 29, 2008 Author: Elizabeth | Filed under: Friends & Family, Memories, Oklahoma, Videos

i live kinda close to norman high, so in the late summer and fall i get to hear the marching band start practice early, early in the morning. and it’s not the least bit unpleasant. it reminds me of home and of high school, of old friends and the dew on the grass on the football field. chilly october/november evenings, sitting in the stands, watching the purple and white fly across the field. i close my eyes and hope that i never forget what it was like to be seventeen. no matter how very Janis Ian* the situation may have seemed to me at the time, my last two years of high school were the best.

Well, somebody did it. You don’t have to fess up, but…yeah. Anyways. I have TWO WHOLE VOTES. I don’t think I have to worry about being in any calendars!

Where have all the church boys* gone?

Aug 28, 2008 Author: Elizabeth | Filed under: Bloggers, Faith, Links

*Church boys: The kind of boys Granny told me I needed to marry when I was 3. I had hopped up on PawPaw’s lap and asked him, “PawPaw, will you take me to the mall so I can find me a husband?”

Adam McClane has a great post over at his blog today. I think he’s hit the nail on the head, as I have seen and know many young, Christian males who are currently enjoying an “extended adolescence.”

So here’s a little unsolicited advice to the single men in my life. Pack away the controller. Get a job. Sleep at night. Build your relationship with Jesus. Start thinking about things that aren’t connected to a controller. And you’ll be like super hot to the single women at your church.

What’s the reward? Well, unlike video games a woman provides lifelong companionship, fulfillment, someone to hold your hand at movies, deep friendship, completeness… and if you are man enough to marry a woman… there are other benefits as well. I’ll let you read Song of Solomon to figure that out.

Oh, you didn’t hear? I’m getting married!
Next year!
If you want, I can flaunt the things you can get your
Lizzy dear!

(English degree being of some use in my life after college — check.)

1. Mr. Coffee 4-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker CGX5 - I am sold on having a timer on my coffee maker.
2. KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer, Onyx Black - It’s not a wedding registry until you have a KitchenAid mixer on it.
3. Bodum Glass Teapot - There is something about being able to see the tea brewing in the pot. I think these things are gorgeous.
4. Molcajete = GUACAMOLE!
5. “Fiesta” Dinnerware in Scarlet - This stuff is so pretty. Planning on using it as our casual dining ware.
6. Cuisinart “SmartPower Duet” Chrome Blender/Food Processor - I need one that doesn’t leak out my Avocado Soup.
7. Glass Mixing Bowls, Set of 10 - Again, I just love the clear glass and being able to see what you’re making.
8. Zeroll Ice Cream Scoop - Have you seen these things in action? They are amazing. I will use it to scoop my low-carb ice cream :-D
9. Shun Classic Kitchen Shears - Mine gave out a while back and I was trying to put off buying new ones, in anticipation of my wedding shower, but I just couldn’t. So I’m using cheapies again. I give them a couple of months, tops.
10. Glass Domed Cake Plate - Seeing a trend here? I like to be able to enjoy the beauty of the food I make.
11. Tarnow Trifle Bowl - And, umm…yeah. Again. I can’t think of a trifle though without thinking of the episode of Friends when Rachel makes one.
12. Williams-Sonoma Casual Pitcher - I’ll make lemonade in this puppy. Sugar-free, most likely. But lemonade, still.
13. Anniversary Bundt® Pan - Kevin! I’ll make you a Bundt!

No More First Days

Aug 26, 2008 Author: Elizabeth | Filed under: Daily, Friends & Family, Links, Memories, The Fiancé

Every week Bossy does a Ten-Word Tuesday. Today she asked her readers to describe their first day of college. Here’s mine:

Hallmark card from Mom in backpack. Bawling in poli/sci class.

I wasn’t exactly bawling, but the tears I’d been holding back since Mom and Dad walked out of my room on the Friday before started bubbling up again. I can’t help it. I’m an emotional person. My first crying session was when they left me and between then and my first class the only crying I’d done was in the shower. Where my new roommate, Heather, couldn’t see or hear me. Was I sad to be at college? No. Did I miss my parents that much already? Not that much, I assure you. I had blanket with me and really, that was enough. But I’m that kinda girl. Big steps in my life are HUGE for me. Never been one to handle change very well, even if it’s the kind of change that I know will bring tremendous, wonderful things.

Maybe if someone had told me that my future husband was in a room less than 100 yards away from me (one floor down and just one wing over), I might have been a bit more enthused about the whole thing.

What have I been up to? Working hard on our wedding website!! Don’t have everything quite ready, but you are welcome to head on over and take a gander at what gave me a decent sized migraine on Saturday.

Sunday Morning Coffee

Aug 24, 2008 Author: Elizabeth | Filed under: Daily

I know I announced that I’d be doing this new weekly post a few weeks back and then never did, but let’s just pretend like it’s going to be THAT GREAT and I needed a whole lot of time to plan it out. Yeah. That’s it.

Welcome to the first edition of Sunday Morning Coffee. Why Sunday Morning Coffee? Well, because it’s Sunday. And I’m drinking coffee, just like I do every Sunday morning. For it to be a day of rest for me I have to get up and allow myself enough time to actually *rest*. I know that waking up early seems to defeat the purpose, but hear me out.

I am a piddler. I like to have 3 hours to do something that should only take one. Do I usually behave in that manner? No, because my life is just too busy to allow it. My mother would be surprised to learn that I often shower, dress, fix my hair, put on makeup, and am out the door for work in less than 30 minutes. And believe me, that is a flippin’ miracle. You don’t even want to know how many times I missed the bus in 9th grade because I still had rollers in my hair.

So anyway, I’m usually awake by 7am on any given Sunday. My first stop is the coffee pot, where I make a pot of Starbucks Caffè Verona® then I go into the living room and turn on the computer while I wait for the coffee to brew. My first things to check are of course my Gmail and Google Reader, next I’m onto GodlyGals and then Twitter. After checking those few things, I get my coffee and whatever breakfast I might be having that day, return to the living room, and thoroughly enjoy the next hour and a half of my morning. The tv is often tuned to Fox & Friends Sunday, or if I happen to see a movie on that looks interesting I will stop there. There always seems to be quite a variety playing on Sunday mornings, and as a child when we drove 45 minutes to church every Sunday I rarely got to see any of those. This is a treat for me. Now I live literally 2 minutes from the church I attend, instead of 45. To top all that off, my parents liked to be early…for SUNDAY SCHOOL. That meant we were there around 8:45. And that I had been awake since 6. Yawn. I’m tired just thinking about it.

I guess this edition will just be an introduction. Most Sundays I will share what I’ve been checking out on the internet in the preceding week. Oh yes, it will be fun.

Thinking…

If there is a kook on the ticket, my neighbors across the street have a yard sign out supporting them. Hey mister, maybe if you’d wear something other than cut-off denim shorts the world could take you and your opinions seriously.
