As of Late – January 2012

I am linking up with Critty Joy’s “As of Late” for the first time this month. I thought it would be a nice way to look back and have idea of what was going on from month to month, since there are certainly little details that I leave out about what’s going on in the day-to-day of my life.

Lately I have been trying to figure out where the mysterious leak in my fairly new shower is coming from. I am both a detective and an amateur plumber. Living alone for a few years forced me to learn a lot of things and I think my husband is constantly realizing what a catch he got with me

Lately I have been writing more. Bits and pieces here and there. Even the littlest bit is better than nothing, right? Picking up old stories, remembering where they came from, reworking. Lawsy mercy, 2004-2005, you were a weird time for me. But my writing was better when my heart was mildly broken. So, sad as it is, I’ve been trying to remember that place. It’s not a difficult thing to do, however once I am there I have to remind myself that now is not then. No matter what kind of emotions I stir up — life is not as it was in 2005. The choices, the options, the characters…are not the same.

Lately I am being really cryptic. Ahem, pardon me.

Lately there’s been a lot of good new music drifting through my house. Let me say it again — I love my Sonos.

Lately I have been making playlists to write by. What’s some of your favorite music to write to?

Lately I have been prowling through old journals. It’s amazing to see these things that I wrote when I was 17 and realize that for the most part I am the same. The handwriting has little progress. (I had grand dreams that by the time I was this age I would have a gorgeous, flowing script. Eh. Not so much.) Part of me thinks that 17-year-old me would be disappointed with where 27-year-old me is. But that is another tale for another time. I’ll be coming back to these journals.

Lately I have felt the urge to play Emma Woodhouse. You know, matchmaker. Lucky for you single friends of mine I’m having a hard time matching you all up together. If I had a larger pool to choose from, this could get dangerous.

Lately I have chosen to have good days. To walk in and say, “I don’t have control of this situation, but it does not have control of me either and I will not let someone else’s stupidity or ignorance or laziness determine how I feel.” And you know what? I think it’s working.

I’m happy to announce that I have a working Keurig again. Hooray!

I almost finished it last night, but I was tired of crying over it — so I’m finishing The Bridges of Madison County this morning and blubbering into my coffee mug. Are you on Goodreads?
If I could afford this number by Monique Lhuillier it would be my goal dress. (Ready-to-Wear Pre-Fall 2012 12363-544…for posterity)

Flying Wild Alaska is my new obsession. Alaska has forever been an interest of mine and I’ve always gobbled up books about the state, but now I have a half dozen TV shows about the place at my fingertips. Gotta love it! Anyone else watch this show?
Speaking of TV obsessions — fangirl moment. A former EastEnders actress (Kylie Babbington, “Jodie Gold”) responded to me on Twitter. It’s the little things, y’all.

The Oklahoma State Fair 2011

(above photo courtesy of Jennifer)Last night I headed up to Oklahoma City with Clare the Scoodle in tow to drop her off for a little playdate with Ms. Juliet. After the dogs were introduced, Juliet’s mom (my good pal Jennifer) and I were off to the Oklahoma State Fair! It had been a couple of years since I’d been and I was thrilled to be going with someone who was as excited about all the animals and food as I was.

We started the evening off with a trick dog show. Incredible animals. It reminded me why I love Border Collies so much. I’d seen some of them on The Late Show with David Letterman a few times, but it was really cool to see them in person.

Then we found Hamish. He was one of the lucky Clydesdales to pull the stagecoach that the Duke and Duchess rode during their Canadian tour.

We both located our desired fair food. I chose none other than the Bacon Cinnamon Roll.

It was just as amazing as it looks. Sweet with a slight maple flavor, melt in your mouth pastry, and then WHAMMO! the savory taste of bacon. It’s like your entire breakfast in one not-so-tiny pastry. However, I think I could do a better job on this and I’m definitely going to try.

Jennifer opted for the classic funnel cake. It’ll never let you down.

I said no to the “chocolate covered bacon churro.”

We headed over to check out the bands that were performing, but by this time we had been on our feet for so long that we were ready to call it a night. After three hours in the neon lights, smoke, and smell of fair delights, we strolled back to the car. And jumped a muddy ravine to get there.

Unfortunately, the comments were lost when Cyberpixels went crazy and crashed my blog while simultaneously charging me double every month for hosting (I can’t speak for them now because they may be under new management, but that is one company I would NOT do business with again). Some woman stopped by and went on a tirade about the Catholic church that was just scathing. Go read the post. How she got from reception play lists to the Catholic church, I have no clue.

Most Helpful Post – How to Choose Your Bridesmaids

A lot of people end up on my blog because they search for related terms and I hope that something they read here is helpful. I’ve heard from a few that it was. And to every person who has landed on my blog because they searched for “Who to choose for a bridesmaid when I don’t have any friends”…come here. I’ll give you a hug.

Most Underrated Post – The Entire Honeymoon Series & Blackberry Pickin’: Stuff You Need to Know

I think it was the best thing to hit my blog in a long time! And by far the best trip I’ve ever been on. It’s what I started writing when I came back from my semi-long hiatus after the miscarriage and it really got me back into the groove of writing. If you haven’t gone through this series yet, it’s worth it just for the photos of Maine and Prince Edward Island. (Someone – remind me to go through and insert the larger versions of those photos when I’m done here.)

The blackberry post is one of my favorites and I think it provides some helpful information for people who would like to try wild blackberry picking. Ours all burned up — both by fire and the sun — this year.

Post You’re Most Proud Of

The Post Office -I reminisce about the past and what life was like growing up in a house connected to a post office.

Meanwhile, back at The Ranch: Part 1 and Part 2 -Did I get across how excited I was to be at Pioneer Woman’s ranch? Hmm. Not sure. I know I haven’t quite explained just HOW MUCH I love Trisha Yearwood and what a shock it was to see her walk into the room. This was a good day.
