Thirteen Keys to My Heart

1. Delilah – Sick, sad, and true. I have listened to her show regularly since the fall of 1996. Dude.
I was 12! A call to the self-proclaimed “Queen of Sappy Love Songs” would definitely put a person
in my good graces.
2. Folklore roses – I adore orange/coral roses in many shapes and forms, but so far, this is my
favorite. Forget red roses. I’d pick these puppies over the most perfect red any day.
3. Seafood – Oh boy. I love it so much and haven’t found any creature who calls the sea its home
that I don’t find tasty. Mm-mm.
4. Old films – Many of my favorites came out when my Granny was my age. They’re the best. A
few that I really enjoy watching are Splendor in the Grass, Two for the Road, and Picnic.
5. Fairs – You know, of the county, state, whatever variety. I love them! It’s the nighttime atmos-
phere with all the lights, spilled bags of popcorn, discarded turkey legs, scary carnies, spinny rides
that make you throw up your fried Twinky…man. I love it.
6. Christmas lights – I. Love. Them. Oh my goodness. For the past few years I’ve always gone to
view them in Chickasha, Oklahoma and those are SO great. And this year I’ll get to go with Kevin!
7. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey – I don’t know what it is about this song,
but it’s good any time of year for me. Whenever I hear it on the radio I become instantly happier.
8. Sephora – Sorry. Just had to throw that in there. On our (what was it?) 4th or 5th date Kevin
even went into one with me. See, he’s a keeper.
9. Chocolate & cherries – Good gracious. This is one deadly combo for me. I love cherries and
cherry flavored things, so add the chocolate (the darker, the better!) and you’ve got me. Black
Forest cake is a wonderful thing.
10. Children’s books – They are sweet and remind me of simpler times. While I don’t consider
Anne of Green Gables strictly a children’s book, any girl around the age of 11 should definitely
start reading the series. It (HONESTLY) changed my life.
11. COFFEE – Were caps necessary? YOU BET YOUR BRITCHES THEY WERE. I’ll take this stuff in
any form. IV drip is the preferred method.
12. Cream cheese & fake cheese – I couldn’t include one without the other. With the first you
have something that I consider to be a marketable alternative to your average candy bar (You
know, it comes in sticks and I could never understand why my mom wouldn’t let me eat it that
way. It’s possible that she was concerned about my saturated fat intake.) and the base of a very
special icing used on red velvet cake. Can’t go wrong there. The second is your key ingredient in
the very best ball game foods. Yum.
13. Kit Kat – The king of all candy bars. I cannot put into words what this fine piece of chocolate
means/does to me, so I’ll steal a line from Gilmore Girls (formerly a key to my heart until it was
CANCELLED), “The only way I could love you more is if you had a Kit Kat bar growing out of the
side of your head.” And my dears, that couldn’t be more true.
Sadly (for any interested parties) my heart is taken now. I have The Best Boyfriend in the World.
How could he not be? The guy covered numbers 3, 10, and 11 on the first date.

Thirteen things I didn’t learn in college
As my last spring semester at the University of Oklahoma comes to a close (and attempts to murder my blog), I thought I would let you readers know a few things that college did not teach me.

1. Jerks are jerks. College does not change them. DO. NOT. DATE. THEM. (I can supply a list of names, it’s short, but informative.)
2. How to jump start my car.
3. Why I should go to class. (But I think I might have that one figured out now.
4. Worrying gets you nowhere.
5. Why Waiting for Godot is so stinkin’ important.
6. That throwing my hands in the air and joining the circus would be a bad idea.
7. Why math is important in my life. They try to tell you this lie in high school, kids. Don’t believe them. Become an English major, take Physics for Poets (actually, DON’T), and Math for Idiots and you are SET.
8. That I could be a successful human being. No. They stop telling you that after your Gateway class (freshman orientation).
9. That you should never tell your parents that you could possibly graduate early. Don’t do this. They like to hold you to things that can save them money.
10. My family is still absolutely the most important thing that I have.
11. How nice it is to drive home.
12. That anyone (aside from a few select professors and my wonderful advisor) cares about your well-being.
13. That mental health is a top priority. Don’t kid yourself.

Thirteen things I don’t have to worry about when my boyfriend meets my parents

1. Him praying to ward off the powers of Xenu when we say grace.
2. Either of my parents taking out their teeth. Because they both still have theirs.
3. Dad bringing a gun along with him to clean, since we’re going to be eating at Red Lobster I think it’s unlikely. I could be wrong though.
4. Anyone breaking into song. This usually only happens at Olive Garden when Grannie is there. “Wheeeeeeen the moon hits your eye…”
5. Dad ordering gizzards.
6. My parents revealing the existence of “Blanket” to Kevin…because he already knows.
7. Mom giggling like a schoolgirl. Wrong. I totally have to worry about that.
8. Dad calling Kevin a yankee. Wrong again.
9. Paw Paw showing up. Not that it would be a problem, but it’s better to break a person in with my parents first.
10. Either of my parents asking me if I’m going to break up with Kevin anytime soon. They wouldn’t say that in front of him, in fact, Mom would never say it. But Dad and Grannie ask me that every time they talk to me. Paw Paw hasn’t acknowledged the existence of any other man in my life. At least not to me.
11. My brothers beating him up. Because they won’t be there.
12. Dad doing something weird with his finger that’s missing the end. I don’t think he’ll stick it up to his nose or anything, though he likes to do that.
13. My parents not liking him. And that’s a wonderful feeling.

Thirteen things I can’t seem to escape

1. Crazy dogs – Okay, this may be calling it too soon, but you meet Lulu and THEN you tell me.
2. Mormons
3. Waiting for Godot – I hate this play. Really. It has been assigned in at least four of my English courses and my group is presenting over it in my capstone course this semester.
4. People with stalkerish tendencies
5. Calvinists
6. This is out there and I’m sure any girl that has ever been in a Yahoo chat room has experienced it as well. I used to advertise GodlyGals a bit there in the Christian chat rooms, but quit due to little interest. AND due to the fact that there were always guys wanting to know if you were single, then if you were interested in getting married, and maybe helping them with their English. In my experience they were mostly from Nigeria and India. So yeah, those guys.
7. Gastrointestinal issues – Yeah, you wanted to know that one ;)
8. Bouquets (at weddings)
9. That person in class that is only there to annoy the professor with stupid questions. Yes, there are stupid questions and they usually apply to due dates whenever they’re listed in the syllabus that you’re holding IN YOUR HAND.
10. Snow – When I pray for snow, I get snow. All you people in Oklahoma should be glad that I don’t pray for it often.
11. At least one professor per semester that thinks you’re only taking his or her class and nothing else.
12. Ear aches – I’ve been prone to them since I was a baby.
13. Chocolate covered Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bars – Wait. Maybe they can’t escape me.
