I’ve returned from Texas, bearing gifts for myself and others (those won’t be shown off since they’re for Christmas). It was a good trip and I haven’t spent that much time shopping in a while. A fact my husband is thankful for, I’m sure.

The biggest thing I made off with was a TV unit from IKEA. Since it was the one thing I really needed to get while we were down there I’m glad I was able to locate one to suit our needs.

It’s from the Hemnes living room collection. Bit by bit we’re going to add to this so that we can have a little more storage in the living room.

In the middle of our shopping when we needed a break we stopped off to catch an afternoon showing of Footloose. It was cheesy and FABULOUS.

How was your weekend?

UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST

Okay, I don’t usually post videos with half-naked strippers in them on my blog. But you have to see this.

Spotted today at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City — a woman in a wheelchair, wearing nothing but her underwear, holding a poodle in her lap.

WHAT?!

I don’t know if she’s trying to make some kind of statement about TSA searches or what, but it’s weird. Possibly trying to promote this evening’s Victoria’s Secret show?

Watch around 0:36-0:44 — it looks like she’s possessed by the devil.

Thoughts?

(Jolene, you may have even more to look forward to on your trip out here!)

UPDATE: On our local news tonight it was revealed that she is a former Playboy Bunny and “didn’t do it for attention.” She claims she’s done this before and never received so much attention for it. *eye roll*

“You have a beautiful smile,” he said. And then he asked if I’d like to go see The Notebook with him at the Union on campus.

“Sure,” I responded, trying not to giggle uncontrollably because it was THE NOTEBOOK and he was a BOY who was ASKING me to see it with HIM.

Ahem.

And so we went that Friday to see the movie. He smelled like heaven and I had my hair done in that twisty, curly style I was rockin’ all the time back then. Back when I was a borderline redhead.

(This was post-Chupo, but you get the picture)

We sat outside of a local frozen custard place and had their seasonal favorite — pumpkin custard. We talked for hours and hours. Then he drove me back to campus, walked me up to my dorm room and said goodnight.

Then I peeked around the corner and watched him get in the elevator.

A boy liked me.

Things continued like that for a while. We spent my birthday at the OU/Nebraska game where he slipped me a birthday card with a Barnes & Noble gift card inside.

“I wanted to get you that book about punctuation, because I thought you’d like it, but I couldn’t remember the title.”

He liked me and he paid attention.

This girl’s heart was thumping away.

He was quiet, not too talkative around my friends, but he was kind and intelligent. And he enjoyed being around me. It was all very new for me. He called me over the Thanksgiving break to tell me how much he missed me and how much he couldn’t wait to see me.

We were barely back a week when I got the phone call from my mom.

“Elizabeth? You may need to come home.”

Not having to brave Wal-mart on Thanksgiving Eve is one of them. (For me, not for Kevin.)

I was raised in a home that had guns. Mostly for sport, but a few for protection. I won’t go into anymore detail than that, but let me set the record straight: I’ve grown up with more than a healthy respect for firearms. We always knew they weren’t to be touched and every safety precaution was taken when we were children. All three of us learned to shoot at a young age and on most days around ’94-’97, you’d likely see me and my brothers in our makeshift (on the ground) treehouse that we built out of a fence the wind took out a few years before.

It’s amazing what an 11-year-old girl can accomplish with a hammer and two younger brothers who don’t think she’s dumb yet. Cheap labor, y’all.

So anyway…I don’t have a problem with guns. We own an antique one from Kevin’s grandfather and ever since I moved into my house and lived alone in 2005, I’ve been meaning to take a class and get one for myself. As you can see, I’m really on top of things.

Early in the evening on Saturday, Kevin and I were driving south to Davis, OK for a wedding. One of my childhood friends was getting married at a local wedding chapel and I was a hostess at the reception with another one of our friends from elementary school. It’s an easy drive south of Norman on I-35. The days are shorter now, so it was dark by the time we got on the road.

Right on the southern edge of Norman, a dark blue Suburban merged onto the interstate in front of us and nothing about it seemed strange. It didn’t take long for it to start some weird lane changing, but nothing that set off any alarms.

As we continued on toward our destination, we noticed a highway patrol on the other side of the highway. He had someone stopped and was shining his spotlight across the road. It landed on the Suburban in front of us and that’s when the strange things started.

They were driving slowly in the right lane, so my husband switched into the left to get ready to pass. Wasn’t happening. Very slowly the other car drifted over into our lane to settle right in front of us again.

Okay, maybe they’re just not paying attention, I thought.

The Eternal Forgiver, that’s me.

Kevin switched back into the right lane. And so did the Suburban. This was getting just a teensy bit ridiculous. Their behavior as this point did concern me a little, but there are so many idiots on the roads, you never know what’s going through these people’s heads.

Back into the left lane we went (and keep in mind, we weren’t being aggressive in any way. We weren’t too close or anything). As we shifted lanes I watched it happen.

Out of the right back window something appeared. Then there was the flash.

POP-POP!

I looked over at Kevin in shock.

“Oh my w-w-word, they fired a gun, Kevin! Oh my goodness!”

“Yeah, they did.” (Gah! Why is he so cool, calm, and collected? Is it that tall, dark, and handsome thing? I mean, cause he’s got that down. Who does he think he is? James Bond?!)

He’d gunned it and we were around them, putting distance between us.

I did what I always do when people fire guns in my vicinity — called my dad. He told us to make sure we got away and kept some distance and to make sure they didn’t see where we exited. And then he told me what I should have done in the first place — call the highway patrol.

I explained everything that happend and their chief concern was that we were away from the threatening vehicle. After I gave them the description of the vehicle and let them know where it happened, they assured me an officer would be out shortly and then let me go.

We went on to the wedding, me just a little bit shakier than usual. Neither of us know what ended up happening, but I can tell you that I have never been so scared in my life. Guns, in general, don’t frighten me. But put them in the hands of a criminal or some road raging crazy person and I don’t want to be anywhere near that business.

We were lucky. They fired out of the side opposite of where we were passing. If it had been on the left, I might be telling you a different story. I don’t know what the lesson here is, but what I can tell you is that a quiet stretch of the interstate in south-central Oklahoma is NOT the place I would expect someone to pull out a gun in anger or stupidity.
