Honey, Honey

Yesterday afternoon on the way home from work I decided to go ahead and swing by somewhere and pick up some local honey for the elderberry syrup I plan on making (thanks, LeAnna!). Native Roots Market is on my route home from work, so I found a parking spot on busy 5 o’clock Main Street and walked in.

It was my first time in Native Roots and I was very impressed. They have a great selection of local offerings and I can’t wait to go back when I have more time to browse.

I picked up 48 ounces of honey from George’s Apiary in Noble, Oklahoma. It. is. divine. (Yes, I had a spoonful as soon as I got home.)

While I was there I also picked up my first ever (because I don’t get out much) Keep It Local OK card. I am so excited to use this thing! When it was applied to my purchase yesterday I saved almost $2. How cool is that? Very, for this frugal girl.

One last note about Native Roots — when they asked me if I’d like a bag I said “no” (that’s in Saving the Planet 101, right?) and just put my honey in the ginormous bag that I use for a purse. Well, any time you don’t ask for a bag/bring your own at Native Roots they give you a little token. You take this token over to a window where they feature various charities and organizations you can support. Choose one, place your token in it’s little tube, and they’ll donate 10 cents (I believe it was) to that particular organization. I love this idea! What made me even happier was seeing that OATH was one of the non-profits I had to choose from. The plight of human trafficking victims around this state and the world has been tugging on my heart for some years now so I was glad to be able to choose them.

And all that just because I wanted some honey.

Sarah the Mule

This is Sarah. Well, part of Sarah. She is a mule that has been living at my parents’ house for a little while now. She’s just visiting though, as far as I know. Dad borrowed her from a friend to take on a hunting trip. I visited her when I was home a few weeks ago. Mom told me that if I would just walk out to the south gate Sarah would hear me and greet me.

Greet me, she did, with a loud whinny. I gathered up a bit of dry grass and fed it to her, flat-palmed like Paw Paw taught me when I was little and he had those three huge white horses. Sarah is a friendly mule and has a lot more personality than some that I’ve dealt with in the past. We used to have mules at the house, but it’s been a while since Dad owned one. When I asked him, “Why mules and not horses?” he explained that a mule will not walk you off the side of a mountain. I don’t know much about riding and I’m certainly not going to ride a mule to the edge of a cliff to test this theory, so I’ll just go with what he said.

Dad and I are “phase” people. We get into hobbies in phases, stay there for a little while, then move on. Sometimes we come back to them, sometimes we don’t. With my dad I can think of a few phases that he went through in the time that I lived at home. Mules, noodlin’, sheep, backhoes. Me…crochet, collage, shadow boxes, hydroponic gardening. It’s funny. Okay, maybe just to me. But in this way I am definitely more like my dad than my mom, who can stick with a few hobbies for a lifetime and be absolutely content — and semi-professional at them.

I like Sarah and hope she sticks around. She’s the perfect subject to photograph because she stands there, eager to be rubbed on the neck, and doesn’t complain about the snap snap snap of my camera.

And I’ll tell you what I’ve done. As you can see I just gave up on NaBloPoMo this year. My first year not complete it in, well, years. But if you follow me on Twitter you know why and I’m not going to rehash the story now.

It’s December. We are now squarely into that part of the year where it’s okay for you crazy people who are so into Christmas that you started listening to tunes of the season in July after you stopped in June to continue doing so without looking like lunatics. No offense. You know who you are!

To ring in the season, every year like I have since 2005, in the Oklahoma style, here is the B.C. Clark jingle spot that Heather and I were on in 2005. As I child I dreamed and hoped that I would someday be on TV singing this, so it was a huge thing to cross off my bucket list. I only wish that I had put it on a list before I did it so I could have had something to cross off. (We’re on at 0:22 — I’m on the right. It’s brief so look close!)

Family Photo Outtakes

While we were back home for Thanksgiving, I handed off my camera to my cousin Jessica so that we could attempt to get a decent family photo. Something that hasn’t happened since my wedding and before that probably not since…well, since my youngest brother decided to start making faces. So, like 1992.

Please note that my dad is not actually choking my mother.

He is, to her horror, picking her up.

I am doing the same thing I did at my wedding rehearsal.

Then it looks like my husband thought about picking up my mother. I don’t think he actually did it. Probably in his best interest not to.

Meh.

Saturday, my dad got a 29-point buck that he’d been stalking for weeks. Wahoo! It was a proud day for him, that’s for sure. He says he doesn’t figure he’ll ever get another one like it in his life, so you better believe this fella is going up on the wall.

The other fabulous thing about this? DEER. JERKY. Mmm.

The Girlie Show in Review

As I mentioned yesterday, Jolene and I joined up with our friend Emily on Friday night to check out this year’s Girlie Show in OKC. What a fun time we had! The place was packed and for good reason. There were lots of talented artists featured (some that I remembered from last year) and tons of local food. Friday night is where it’s at as for as this show is concerned (in my own humble little opinion). The atmosphere with the DJs and the addition of free food all over the place makes it a great place to go out with friends and check out some local artists…and a few that have traveled a ways to get there.

The star for me last night was (drumroll) — a hot dog. This will come as no surprise to people who are my bosom friends.

The hot dog in question came from Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs, a newer establishment in OKC. I’ve been meaning to try it for a while now, so seeing them at The Girlie Show was a welcome surprise. Last night they were featuring their Sweet Caroline, a Carolina style hot dog with chili, cole slaw, mustard, and green onion. Not only do I love the name, but the dog itself totally met up to my expectations for a Carolina dog (the ones at Jennifer’s in Clinton, NC are not to be missed). It had just the right amount of spice for me. Their chili? Well, that’s the stuff dreams are made of. YUM.

My trio had a great time and I can’t wait for next year!
